It's the quintessential buzz word of modern life. It hangs on everyone's lips from the first miles of the morning commute until the screeching alarm clock starts yet another day. Countless articles and studies tell the same story: lives controlled by unmanaged stress end early and none too well. This book describes a simple, straightforward method readers can learn and practice to literally transform stress by shifting the heart's own rhythms. At the core of the HeartMath method of emotional regulation is the idea that, by focusing on positive feelings such as appreciation, care, or compassion, anyone can create dramatic changes in his or her heart rhythms. These changes precipitate a series of neural, hormonal, and biochemical events that dissipate stress and anger and lead to greater well-being. The benefits from using this system are remarkable and far-reaching: blood pressure drops, stress hormone levels fall, immune system activity increases, and anti-aging hormone levels rise. Through its interactive learning system, this book teaches readers to use the HeartMath method, enabling them to see and experience in real time how thoughts and emotions affect their heart rhythms. It teaches them how to engage their hearts to bring emotion, body, and mind into balance, and helps them stay in a zone of focused clarity, optimal health, and high performance. Changes brought about through this method are fast-acting and long-lasting, the perfect antidote to our chaotic and fast-paced lives. In May 2004 prominent philosopher, author, and professor J. P. Moreland awoke in the middle of the night to a severe panic attack. Though often anxious by temperament and upbringing, Moreland had never experienced such an incident before. Thus began an extended battle with debilitating anxiety and depression. More than a decade later, Moreland continues to manage mental illness. Yet along the way he's moved from shame and despair to vulnerability and hope. In Finding Quiet Moreland comes alongside fellow sufferers with encouragement and practical, hard-won advice. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, nearly 20 percent of Americans suffer from mental illness, and people in the pews are not immune. Moreland explores the spiritual and physical aspects of mental illness, pointing readers toward sound sources of information, treatment, and recovery. Bracing and honest, Finding Quiet will validate the experiences of believers with mental illness, remind them they are not alone, and provide reassurance that they can not only survive but thrive again.

A constant sense of being overwhelmed, fatigued, and stretched to the limit leads us to feelings of hopelessness and a lack of interest in normally pleasurable activities-the principal signs of depression. By using the HeartMath(r) techniques, readers will be able to tap into new reserves of energy and creativity and will find new ways to connect with the people in their lives. As a result, feelings of depression will lessen and dramatic change will take place for better health in mind and body.

To serve the increasing numbers of individuals who have survived interpersonal and domestic violence, or as refugees, have sought asylum from political violence, armed conflict, or torture, Transforming the Legacy presents an innovative relationship-based and culturally informed couple therapy practice model that is grounded in a synthesis of psychological and social theories. This unique couple therapy model encompasses three phases of clinical practice: Phase I entails a process of establishing safety, stabilization, and a context for changing legacies of emotional, sexual, and/or physical abuse. Phase II guides reflection on the trauma narrative. The goal of phase III is to consolidate new perspectives, attitudes, and behaviors. Within these phases, the model—illustrated with rich case studies—focuses on specific issues, including: intersubjectivity between the client and clinician (such as transference and countertransference, vicarious traumatization, and racial identity development); intrapersonal, interactional, and institutional factors; the role of the "victim-victimizer-bystander" dynamic in the couple and therapeutic relationships; preserving a locus of control with clients; flexibility in decisionmaking regarding clinical processes; and specific practice themes, such as the composition of a couple, the role of violence, parenting, sexuality, affairs, dual diagnoses, and dissociation. A dramatic departure from formulaic therapeutic approaches, this biopsychosocial model emphasizes the crafting of specific treatment plans and specific clinical interventions to show how couple therapy can transform the legacies of childhood traumatic events for a wide range of populations, including military couples and families, gay lesbian/bisexual/transgendered couples and families, and immigrant and refugee couples and families. This thorough attention to issues of cultural diversity distinguish Transforming the Legacy from the current literature and make it an invaluable resource for clinicians in a wide range of professional disciplines.

Many smart students are struggling in school, whether they are in 1st grade or high school. Reading comprehension, homework and standardized tests are the main causes of stress. In The 3D Learner, Transform Stress to Success for Your Child, the Halperts describe how they themselves went through the process of discovering their children learned differently, and understanding the issues that needed to be addressed for their children to be successful in school and life. Terms like dyslexia, learning disability, ADHD, CAPD and others are labels that describe what is wrong, but rarely lead to positive solutions. Most smart struggling students learn differently, and have some combination of attention, eye teaming, auditory and related issues, and medication is often suggested as the main way to address attention issues. The Halperts identify students who learn differently as 3D Learners. They learn best when material is presented in a hands-on visual way. These learners often achieve success when they are taught to their strengths and their challenges are identified and addressed. Parents are given tools on how and what to look for, in order to help their child transform stress to outrageous success. Underlying issues such as attention, processing, sequencing, and memory are described in a way that parents can relate to and understand. Solutions for setting goals, communicating effectively with teachers and professionals to create a collaborative and positive environment are some of the topics described. Transforming stress to outrageous success for your child takes time and effort from all involved. Once parents understand the issues their child is experiencing, and how they can make the difference, the future will look much brighter.
