This is a collection of essays written during the course of a career in public education spanning over forty years. The essays reflect the author's optimism and frustrations with the business of schools and the impractical way schools hire, fire, and retain teachers and administrators. The author suggests new ways to examine practices and procedures in the public schools in the United States, from core curricula to discipline, even suggesting a utopian school district. Filled with anecdotes and thought-provoking questions, the author describes the life of a public school employee in a variety of positions within a centrally isolated Upstate New York public school system. A must-read for anyone considering a profession within the public schools, for new school board members, or for parents who want to know the dirty little secrets that exist in a public school system typical of any public school system in the United States. The “entertaining and enlightening” (Stephen King) final word on the genius and mischief of the Ramones, told by the man who created the beat behind their iconic music and lived to tell about it. When punk rock reared its spiky head in the early seventies, Marc Bell had the best seat in the house. Already a young veteran of the prototype American metal band Dust, Bell took residence in artistic, seedy Lower Manhattan, where he played drums in bands that would shape rock music for decades to come, including Wayne County, who pioneered transsexual rock, and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, who directly inspired the entire early British punk scene. If punk had royalty, in 1978 Marc became part of it when he was knighted “Marky Ramone” by Johnny, Joey, and Dee Dee of the iconoclastic Ramones. The band of tough misfits were a natural fit for Marky, who dressed punk before there was punk, and who brought his “blitzkrieg” style of drumming as well as the studio and stage experience the band needed to solidify its lineup. Together, they changed the world. But Marky Ramone changed, too. The epic wear and tear of a dysfunctional group (and the Ramones were a step beyond dysfunction) endlessly crisscrossing the country and the world in an Econoline—practically a psychiatric ward on wheels—drove Marky from partying to alcoholism. When his life started to look more out of control then Dee Dee’s, he knew he had a problem. Marky left music in the mid-eighties to enter recovery and eventually returned to help the Ramones finally receive their due as one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time. Covering in unflinching detail the cult film Rock ’N’ Roll High School to “I Wanna Be Sedated” to Marky’s own struggles, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg is an authentic and always honest look at the people who reinvented rock music, and not a moment too soon.

Conducted from 1975 to 1977, this reading achievement study examined the effects of initial literacy in Navajo on later reading in English and the effects of initial arithmetic instruction in Navajo on later arithmetic instruction in English by comparing two groups of Navajo students, both of whom began school essentially monolingual in Navajo. The bilingual group consisted of students from Rock Point Community School who had first been taught to read in Navajo and then, at the second grade level, had also been taught to read in English. The second group consisted of students from a selected sample of BIA schools who had been taught to read in English only in English as a Foreign Lanugage (EFL) direct method programs. The study utilized existing programs in carefully selected schools. Students who had received bilingual instruction scored higher on standardized achievement tests than did students at comparable schools who had received English-language-only instruction and better than earlier Rock Point students who had received English-language-only instruction. Also, the bilingual students who were taught arithmetic in Navajo and English until the end of the second grade had significantly higher mean scores on the Total Arithmetic subtests than did the EFL direct method group at grades above the fourth. The major portion of the monograph consists of Appendix A, which describes other related studies and Appendix B, which details the Rock Point Study's methodology, findings of the study, and a statistical analysis. Active Teaching and Active Learning Strategies: Creating a Blueprint for Success is the cumulative result of a year of reflecting, asking, and listening to questions, and comments, that many have concerning the education of our youth. The book's genesis however, started many years ago as the state of California, along with many other states, embraced a standards based accountability system. This accountability has now been coupled with the recent addition of The No Child Left Behind Legislation. In a real sense, we are entering both the best and worst of times. I say this because of the effects of high-stakes testing and the requirement that all students reach high levels of proficiency which admittedly, are very lofty goals. For this to be realized, changes will be required in teaching and assessment, as well as a more concentrated focus on student learning. The instructional design introduced in this book advocates four components: academic, social/collaborative, contextual, and cognitive/developmental. These components work in tandem with Active Teaching and Learning Strategies. Combined, they form a student responsive instructional methodology, which optimizes student success, and academic achievement. We wanted to create a book that demonstrated to those of us in the field of education the value of looking at academic standards with data about our students, and reflecting on how this information should influence our choices concerning instructional practices and our perceptions about the students that we are entrusted with. The focus of this endeavor is to see all students achieve and succeed, and to keep passion and compassion at the heart of all that we do. It is the premise of this book that the difference between effective and outstanding teachers are that outstanding teachers care, know how to utilize data, practice active teaching strategies, and promote the active learning of students. Together these characteristics became the design, and course of action, that Created a Blueprint for Success.

If Life Was Like a Song Nina Simmons' song would be "You Can't Always Eat What You Want." (Peanut allergies, ugh). But that's okay, because as her best friend Brianna always said, "We're All in This Together." Until the first day of the seventh grade, when Brianna dumps her to be BFFs with the popular new girl. Left all alone, Nina is forced to socialize with "her own kind"--banished to the peanut-free table with the other allergy outcasts. As a joke, she tells her new pals they should form a rock band called EpiPens. (Get it?) Apparently, allergy sufferers don't understand sarcasm, because the next thing Nina knows she's the lead drummer. Now Nina has to decide: adopt a picture-perfect pop personality to fit in with Bri and her new BFF or embrace her inner rocker and the spotlight. Well.. Call Me a Rock Star, Maybe.

This timely book shows how award-winning secondary schools and districts are successfully using technology and making systemic changes to increase student engagement, improve achievement, and re-invigorate the teaching and learning process. Through in-depth case studies, we see how experienced school and district leaders use technology in curricular, administrative, and analytical ways to meet the needs of 21st-century learners, educators, and communities. These cases reveal important details addressed by the leadership of these schools and districts that go beyond what they did with technology to include changes in school culture, curriculum and teaching, uses of assessment data, financial considerations, infrastructure, and involvement with the community. Book Features: Successful models from schools/districts experienced with using technology as a lever for school improvement.Case studies from diverse schools/districts across the country that show “what works” and “how it works.”A cross-case analysis that makes it easy to compare individual schools and identify common practices. Barbara B. Levin is a Professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education and Director of the Teachers Academy at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Lynne Schrum is Dean, College of Education and Human Services, West Virginia University. “Barbara B. Levin and Lynne Schrum offer their readers the distinct advantage of compressing into a single volume what it took me decades to learn. They not only present the big ideas of effective school leadership, but bring them alive through case studies that illustrate how those ideas manifest themselves in leaders’ day-to-day behaviors. . . . I encourage you to use the ideas and practices you find here to leverage technology to create schools in which all students and adults thrive.” —From the Foreword by Dennis Sparks, Emeritus Executive Director, National Staff Development Council (Learning Forward) Prepublication Reviews: “In Leading Technology-Rich Schools, the authors present a fascinating and exciting set of case studies that provide great insight into the ways leaders can support high-level innovation in schools. Importantly, their focus is on technology that enhances learning and teaching, rather than technology as an expensive school ornament. A must-read for those who study and practice educational leadership.” —Jeffrey S. Brooks, Associate Professor and Educational Leadership Program Coordinator, School of Education, Iowa State University, author of Black School, White School: Racism and Educational (Mis)leadership “This book is a precious gift for the vast majority of administrators who desperately need concrete examples of how to create, facilitate, and sustain technology-infused learning environments.” —Scott McLeod, Associate Professor and Founding Director, CASTLE, University of Kentucky “These rich illustrations of technology leadership in secondary schools show how a number of complex variables must come together to produce the key outcome of positioning educational technology as a support to teaching and learning. Examples of leadership practices that coordinate team members for interdependent work and invite teachers' involvement should prove to be a valuable resource to practitioners and also provide insight to policymakers for how they can create supportive conditions for such work.” —Sara Dexter, Associate Professor, Department of Leadership, Foundations, and Policy, Curry School of Education, University of Virginia “Leading Technology-Rich Schools is a key advance in understanding how technology can best be integrated in today’s schools. These case studies of effective practice are sure to become required reading for those in leadership positions who are using technology for school improvement.” —Glen L. Bull, Samuel Braley Gray Professor of Education, Curry School of Education, University of Virginia “The rubber meets the road in this well-researched book with detailed stories of exemplary schools and school leaders that have leveraged technology as a key tool to make significant reforms stick. Through these vivid case studies, Levin and Schrum illuminate a dynamic and complex set of lessons learned to help all school leaders undertake transformations of their schools.” —L.
